PROTECTIVE SERVICES PERSONNEL HONOURED IN PRINCE ALBERT

Released on June 10, 2013

Today in Prince Albert, Provincial Secretary Wayne Elhard joined Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield to present the Saskatchewan Protective Services Medal to recipients.

“It’s truly a pleasure to recognize the everyday heroes who serve us and who, as members of our communities, set high standards and strive for excellence in their duties so Saskatchewan people can live safe and secure lives,” Elhard said.

The medal recognizes individuals who have 25 years or more of exemplary service protecting Saskatchewan people or their property in either a volunteer or a full-time capacity.  Recipients can include firefighters, police officers, corrections workers, provincial traffic officers, Canadian Forces members and emergency medical responders.

Established in 2003, the medal is administered by the Government of Saskatchewan in close co-operation with the Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police, Saskatchewan Firefighters Association and other agencies with eligible personnel.

At Monday’s event, Saskatchewan Conservation Officer Justin Knackstedt was recognized. CO Knackstedt lost his life while assisting the RCMP on Friday, May 31.  The Lieutenant Governor, Provincial Secretary, recipients and guests also recognized CO Knackstedt’s sacrifice with a minute of silence before the presentation ceremony.  He has been posthumously awarded the Saskatchewan Award of Excellence.
