NORTH BATTLEFORD GENERATING STATION NOW PART OF PROVINCIAL ELECTRICAL GRID

Released on June 5, 2013

The newly constructed North Battleford Generating Station is now contributing power to the provincial electrical grid to help meet the growing demand for electricity in Saskatchewan.

The 260 megawatt (MW) combined cycle natural gas facility began operations today.

“This investment is part of SaskPower’s long-term plans to power Saskatchewan’s future,” Economy Minister Bill Boyd said.  “SaskPower will invest approximately $1 billion this year as we work to renew and rebuild our  electrical system.”

The North Battleford Generating Station will provide both baseload (constant) and intermediate (on-demand) power generation for the province.  It has the capacity to generate enough electricity to power approximately 250,000 homes.  The addition of the station brings SaskPower’s total generating capacity to 4,355 MW, and follows other significant natural gas expansion initiatives in recent years, such as the refurbishment of Queen Elizabeth Power Station now underway near Saskatoon, and the Ermine Power Station near Kerrobert, commissioned in 2009.

“We expect the demand for power to continue to grow over the next decade, so new generation sources are needed,” SaskPower President and CEO Robert Watson said.  “Natural gas is attractive because of its lower capital construction costs and relatively quick construction timelines.”

Northland Power Inc., a leading Canadian independent power producer, was chosen to build and operate the combined cycle facility following a competitive bidding process initiated by SaskPower in 2008.  Combined cycle plants combine a gas turbine with a secondary steam turbine generator to provide higher efficiency.  SaskPower and Northland Power have entered into a 20-year power purchase agreement for the facility.

Northland Power also operates the Spy Hill Generating Station, an 86 MW natural gas peaking facility near Esterhazy, as well as a number of facilities located in Ontario, Quebec, the United States and Germany.
