HEALTH AUTHORITY FINED $154,000 FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY VIOLATIONS

Released on July 16, 2013

Saskatoon Regional Health Authority has pleaded guilty to two counts under The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996 related to a failure to ensure that workers were trained in all matters that are necessary to protect the health and safety of workers, and a failure to arrange for the regular examination of a plant under its control.  It was fined $154,000 in Humboldt Provincial Court on July 15, 2013.

The conviction relates to an incident that occurred on December 26, 2010.  Multiple workers were exposed to carbon monoxide that accumulated in the mechanical room at St. Mary’s Villa, which then spread throughout the facility.  Nine other charges were stayed.

The Occupational Health and Safety Division conducts approximately 4,000 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are understood and enforced.
