PROVINCE AND HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HELP A REGINA FAMILY ACHIEVE HOMEOWNERSHIP

Released on July 8, 2013

Another Habitat for Humanity Regina partner family has a place to call home, thanks to $50,000 in funding assistance from the Government of Saskatchewan through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation.  Regina Dewdney MLA Gene Makowsky on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude, and other partners attended a key presentation today to celebrate the completion of the home located at 123 Rothwell Crescent.

“There’s no better team than Habitat for Humanity and its circle of volunteers and partners when it comes to making homeownership dreams for Saskatchewan people come true,” Makowsky said.  “Today’s announcement shows what can happen when people with a vision come together to help a Saskatchewan family start a new life.  This is at the heart of our Saskatchewan Plan for Growth, which includes a vision for strengthening communities by providing safe, quality and affordable homes for families in need.”

“I wish we were able to do 100 key ceremonies each year in Regina,” Habitat for Humanity Regina CEO Dennis Coutts said.  “Homeownership is an opportunity to break the poverty cycle.  Too many families have their hopes, dreams, and plans for the future stolen by an enemy of us all – poverty.  Today is a fantastic celebration, and we are delighted to celebrate with the family and all our wonderful partners, particularly the Government of Saskatchewan, Northridge, Mosaic and the City of Regina.”

In the 2013-14 Budget, the province is committing an additional $2 million to help build 40 new Habitat for Humanity homes throughout the province.  This represents the largest budget increase in funding to Habitat for Humanity in Canada, and brings the province’s overall commitment to Habitat for Humanity to $7.1 million since March 2009.  This total includes $600,000 from the province’s Summit Action Fund, which will create sustainable revolving land trusts in Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert to assist in the purchase and development of land for 39 to 49 units.

Each selected Habitat partner family contributes 500 partnering hours to build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes.  This assists in the development of the Habitat for Humanity community and their neighbourhood.
