Today Education Minister Russ Marchuk joined students, teachers, members of the community and representatives from the Regina Public School Division to officially commemorate the opening of the new $19.2 million Arcola Community School.
“Investing in education is key to the success of our students, and to the growth and prosperity of Saskatchewan,” Marchuk said. “This school is a great example of 21st century learning. The design brings an environmentally sustainable approach together with providing learning opportunities, resulting in an environment where students are encouraged to learn and explore in new ways.”
Arcola Community School’s design was inspired by the geography and landscape of the province. The connection area, a large open space that can be shaped and partitioned to create the type of learning environment students require, is an aerial view of Saskatchewan, with a winding river connecting the province’s five provincial ecozones. Sustainable features, such as a green roof that will include a section with a vegetation layer, a living wall, and a rainwater collection system, were included to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver standard, as well as to provide teaching and learning opportunities.
The Government of Saskatchewan contributed more than $12.5 million toward this project.
“Built around a student-focussed flexible learning environment, our newest school’s innovative design celebrates the landscape of our great province,” Regina Board of Education Chairperson Katherine Gagne said. “This design is complemented by environmentally sound and fiscally responsible construction. It is a great example of how our schools can meet the needs of students and their community today and well into the future.”
Since November 2007, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed approximately $500 million toward 41 major school capital projects and approximately 860 additional smaller school capital projects across the province. This represents a record high investment in school infrastructure.
