MOOSE JAW LAUNCHES CRIME REDUCTION INITIATIVE

Released on January 8, 2013

The Province of Saskatchewan congratulates the City of Moose Jaw on the formation of their own community mobilization program.

"We are pleased Moose Jaw is establishing their own HUB program," Corrections and Policing Minister Christine Tell said. "Our goal is to reduce crime and victimization and help build stronger, safer communities."

The objective of this crime reduction initiative is to bring government, human services agencies, police and community organizations together in a forum where interventions for individuals at risk of offending can be discussed. The appropriate interventions are chosen by the group and acted on by the organizations they represent. By focusing on community safety and wellness and on long-term community goals, the HUB members help address the challenges at-risk individuals face at the local and eventually, the provincial levels.

"Thanks to the efforts of our local Regional Intersectoral Committee (RIC) Co-ordinator Christine Boyczuk, and the RIC executive, we are very pleased to see a Community Mobilization HUB model under the province's Building Partnerships to Reduce Crime strategy implemented in Moose Jaw," Moose Jaw Police Chief Dale Larsen said. "Adding a HUB working committee to the list of other community initiatives already in place will no doubt enhance community safety in Moose Jaw."

Through Building Partnerships to Reduce Crime, communities receive guidance and tools from Corrections and Policing to help them build their own community mobilization programs. Prince Albert implemented the first program in Saskatchewan and similar programs are now being established in Yorkton, La Ronge, La Loche, Swift Current, and in the regions of North Battleford, Nipawin and Estevan-Weyburn. Regina and Saskatoon are exploring ways to enhance existing programs and projects under the Building Partnerships to Reduce Crime approach.
