REGINA FAMILY RECEIVES KEYS TO NEW HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOME

A Habitat for Humanity partner family became proud homeowners at a key ceremony held in Regina today.  The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, provided $50,000 in funding to help build the home.

The project is part of Habitat for Humanity’s first ever 100K in 100 Days initiative, which was launched in the fall of 2011.  The goal was to raise $100,000 in 100 days to help build a home for a Habitat Regina partner family.  This goal was achieved in only 49 days, with 100 women donating $1,000 each.  Construction began in June 2012.

“We congratulate Habitat for Humanity and the women from the 100K project who came together to help another Saskatchewan family secure a better quality of life,” Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude said.  “This is a key component of the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth, which builds on the strengths of Saskatchewan people to sustain the growth of our province now and in the future.  The 100K project is a wonderful example of how we can all work together to provide affordable homeownership opportunities for Saskatchewan families in need.”

“Today shows what can happen when people with like minds come together and pursue a dream of helping a family achieve home-ownership,” Habitat for Humanity Regina CEO Dennis Coutts said.  “The 100 women who funded and built this home are an amazing group of leaders with a vision for families and our community.  Coupled with the generous support of the Provincial Government, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, the dream of homeownership came true for another Saskatchewan family.”

Since March 2009, the Government of Saskatchewan has invested $4.5 million to assist Habitat for Humanity Saskatchewan affiliates in providing a total of 90 homes for low- to moderate-income families across the province in the communities of Prince Albert, Lloydminster, Regina, Saskatoon, Yorkton, Moose Jaw, Nipawin and Humboldt.
