GLOBAL TRANSPORTATION HUB NEW HOME TO RECYCLER

Released on February 11, 2013

Emterra Group to invest more than $8 million on land, building and equipment for new 13-acre development

The Emterra Group, the City of Regina’s new curbside recycling contractor, is building a “world class, state-of-the-art” material recovery facility (MRF) at the Global Transportation Hub in west Regina.

Emterra, awarded a 10-year contract with the City in 2012, has begun construction on a 45,000 square foot operation that will be capable of processing more than 50,000 tonnes of recyclables annually.  The company will invest more than $8 million in the development, which will create 75 jobs during the construction phase and up to 30 full-time jobs.  The facility, to be built on a five hectare site, is scheduled to begin operation on July 1, 2013.

Saskatchewan Minister responsible for the GTH, and Chair of its Board of Directors, the Hon. Bill Boyd said the province is pleased to welcome Emterra to the GTH.  “The province’s strategic plan for growth has helped the GTH project become an important business and investment opportunity,” Boyd said.

“The GTH is Saskatchewan’s commitment to developing a supply chain, logistics and transportation infrastructure that will support global trade for generations to come.  Emterra is the first company to take advantage of the GTH and its most recent infrastructure project completed in the fall of 2012, at a cost of $32.8 million,” the minister added.

Regina Mayor Michael Fougere said “the establishment of Emterra’s MRF puts the City of Regina one more step toward implementing its curbside recycling program and ensuring Regina’s future sustainability.”

“The Global Transportation Hub continues to attract national players to the region and strengthens Regina’s reputation as a warehouse and distribution leader,” Fougere added.

Emterra operates waste resources collection and/or processing and marketing services for more than 80 Canadian Communities, serving 10 per cent of Canada’s population.

“When we begin operation, our Regina facility will provide up to 30 jobs immediately for local residents,” says Emterra Group founder and CEO, Emmie Leung.  “We are already contributing to the regional economy by hiring local contractors, construction companies and other local service providers during construction.”

Leung said Emterra’s experience in working with the GTH team to find solutions to its operational needs has been outstanding.  “The GTH team has been very responsive and has succeeded in making the process to locate at the GTH efficient and seamless.”

THE GLOBAL TRANSPORTATION HUB

The Global Transportation Hub (GTH) is a major Canadian transportation and logistics centre located in Regina, Saskatchewan.  GTH is home to Canadian Pacific, Loblaw, the Yanke Group of Companies and Consolidated Fastfrate.  To date (including Emterra), a total of $338 million of private sector investment has been secured at the GTH.

FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED

Emterra Group is a 100 per cent Canadian company, family owned and operated.  As a whole the company currently provides jobs for over 900 people and owns and operates about 500 trucks, with close to one-third of the fleet powered by alternative greener fuels and energy, including biodiesel and compressed natural gas.

In the fall of 2012, Emterra took its first step into the United States setting up a recycling and waste resources recovery business serving about 50 municipal and commercial clients in the Flint, Michigan vicinity.

Emterra also owns and operates Canada’s largest compressed natural gas-powered fleet and fuelling station in Winnipeg, which is also the world’s largest in a cold weather climate.

“We believe Emterra is a dynamic and progressive company that is growing quickly in a fast-paced industry and we are very excited to be joining the GTH and to be able to rely on efficient rail service and a high velocity of truck movements to access our strategic markets,” Leung said.
