Two Habitat for Humanity partner families became homeowners at a key ceremony held in Humboldt today. The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, helped the families achieve homeownership by providing $100,000 to help build the two homes.
“Today’s dedication reminds us that when we all work together we can help make housing affordable,” Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude said. “In fact, ensuring access to safe and affordable housing is an important component of our Saskatchewan Plan for Growth. That is why our government, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, is so proud to help Habitat for Humanity make this happen.”
“Habitat for Humanity Saskatoon is very excited that the first build in Humboldt is complete and families are moving in,” Habitat for Humanity Saskatoon CEO Barb Cox-Lloyd said. “Humboldt is the first chapter of Habitat Saskatoon to operate, and we are very impressed with the way the community came together to volunteer, donate and see this project through. With the support of the Government of Saskatchewan and the community, two families now have places to call their own.”
“This was our first attempt at a Habitat build in Humboldt,” Habitat for Humanity Humboldt Co-Chair Ivan Buehler said. “It was a great success, thanks to the support of the community. Without financial and labour contributions from individuals, organizations and businesses, what has been accomplished here would not have been possible. We thank all of those people and the great volunteers who did much of the work.”
Since March 2009, the Government of Saskatchewan has invested $4.5 million to assist Habitat for Humanity Saskatchewan affiliates in providing a total of 90 homes for low- to moderate-income families across the province in the communities of Prince Albert, Lloydminster, Regina, Saskatoon, Yorkton, Moose Jaw, Nipawin and Humboldt.
With the cost of building new homes increasing significantly, Habitat is one of the few organizations whose distinct delivery model continues to provide viable homeownership opportunities for low- to moderate-income families. Each selected Habitat partner family contributes 500 hours of sweat equity to build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes, and participates in valuable training and preparation sessions.
