Government House Celebrates The Season With Old Fashioned Family Fun

Released on December 12, 2013

Deck the halls and join the chorus – the Provincial Capital Commission will host its fourth annual Old-Fashioned Victorian Christmas on Saturday, December 14 at Government House.

An evening of free family fun, the event will feature Victorian-style festivities such as Christmas caroling, cookie decorating, horse-drawn wagon rides through the Edwardian Gardens and a special visitor from the North Pole.  The Amédée Forget Museum will also be open to visitors.  An evening for the young and old alike, the event invites all to celebrate the holiday in a new, yet old-fashioned way.

“Government House is the perfect setting for this kind of event,” Minister responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Kevin Doherty said.  “Rich in history and in culture, this National Historic Site and Provincial Heritage Property offers a unique look at Saskatchewan’s past and provides visitors with an exciting opportunity to celebrate the season.”

The Old-Fashioned Victorian Christmas will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will run until 8:30 p.m.

Individuals who wish to capture the festive spirit of the evening may have their photo taken by an event photographer.  Photos will be available for download on the Provincial Capital Commission website at www.opcc.gov.sk.ca.  For more information about this event, please call 306-787-9261.

Government House was built in 1891 and first served as the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of the North-West Territories.  Restored to the period of Lieutenant Governor Amédée Forget, the museum gives you a glimpse of life at Government House at the turn of the 20th century.  Open year round, Government House offers free tours and engaging programs for all ages.  Government House is part of the Provincial Capital Commission, which was established to promote and preserve the distinct heritage and cultural entities within the capital city.
