Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Kevin Doherty announced today that the Government of Saskatchewan will provide a one-time grant of $100,000 to the RCMP Heritage Centre in Regina. The funding, along with a matching $100,000 in financial support and tax abatement by the City of Regina, will help the centre maintain and enhance its core operations while working to establish sustainable funding.
“Working in partnership with the City of Regina, the Government of Saskatchewan is supporting the RCMP Heritage Centre as they continue to implement their business plan,” Doherty said. “As Saskatchewan’s population grows, we believe this showcase of our national police force’s history can play an increasingly important role in both education and tourism for the province.”
Conditions of the agreement aim to increase access to the RCMP Heritage Centre for school-aged children and groups, build capacity within the centre and expand outreach to include guided tours of the RCMP Academy “Depot” Division. The one-time funding agreement will assist with operating costs in the 2013-14 fiscal year.
“The RCMP Heritage Centre is one of the premier tourist attractions in Regina,” Regina Mayor Michael Fougere said. “We are pleased to be collaborating with the province by providing a community investment grant of $100,000 and a tax exemption.”
“This funding is much appreciated as it helps provide financial stability while we grow the experience and increase access for groups,” RCMP Heritage Centre Chief Executive Officer Al Nicholson said. “We appreciate the recognition by both the province and the city, of the historic and unique contribution made by the Mounted Police in our community since 1882 and the importance of sharing that story through the heritage centre, where the tradition lives on.”
The RCMP Heritage Centre is an independent non-profit charitable organization that showcases the history of the RCMP and the settlement of Western Canada. The vision is to develop the centre as a world-class heritage, tourist and educational facility.
This summer, a new pilot program is bringing history to life at the RCMP Heritage Centre. Actors are performing live vignettes on the history of the Force at the Centre and on Amédée Forget, the first Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan and life in the early 1900's at Government House. This program was made possible by the partnership of La Société historique de la Saskatchewan, Canadian Heritage, Government House and the RCMP Heritage Centre.
