MLA ROB NORRIS NAMED LEGISLATIVE SECRETARY FOR INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND EDUCATION

Released on August 1, 2013

Also continues work on Aboriginal Education and Employment

Today, Premier Brad Wall appointed Saskatoon Greystone MLA Rob Norris to be the Legislative Secretary for International Trade and Education.   In this new role, Norris will report to Economy Minister Bill Boyd.

As Legislative Secretary for International Trade and Education, Norris will undertake a number of initiatives:

  • engage with Saskatchewan exporters, newcomer communities and educational institutions regarding new ways to increase Saskatchewan's exports to existing and emerging markets;
  • consult with Saskatchewan exporters, experts and industry, on ways to overcome barriers relating to international trade;
  • help to enhance Saskatchewan's international trade by connecting high achieving international students and researchers with Saskatchewan exporters and industry;
  • in partnership with educational institutions and industry, assist with the recruitment and retention of international students, while also enhancing global opportunities for Saskatchewan students and scholars.

"Today's appointment is another step toward ensuring we fulfill the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth, which identified goals and actions of the Saskatchewan Government to ensure we are capturing the opportunities, and meeting the challenges, of a growing province," Wall stated.

International trade is vital to Saskatchewan's rapidly growing economy.  Our province exported a record $32.6 billion worth of products in 2012 and is poised to break that record once again this year.  In Saskatchewan's Plan for Growth, Saskatchewan committed to being a global leader in export and trade by 2020.

Norris also continues in his current role as Legislative Secretary for First Nations and Métis Engagement, reporting to the Minister Responsible for First Nations, Métis and Northern Affairs Jim Reiter.

Over the past year, as Legislative Secretary for First Nations and Métis Engagement, Norris has consulted extensively with Aboriginal communities, citizens and stakeholders.  He has participated in more than 165 community visits, meetings and initiatives with First Nations and Métis communities, organizations and youth.  This high level of consultation and dialogue with First Nations and Métis communities will continue.

"I am looking forward to my new duties, as increasing Saskatchewan's export trade is a key part of our Plan for Growth,” Norris said.  “I am also pleased to continue working with First Nations and Métis communities, as we focus on practical ways to improve the educational and employment outcomes of Saskatchewan's Aboriginal people. Developing our skilled workforce is a vital component of our vision for growth.”

There is no additional salary associated with either of the Legislative Secretary duties held by Norris.
