Regina Receives $4.2 Million to Continue Targeted Police Initiatives

Released on April 29, 2013

Corrections and Policing, through the Ministry of Justice, contributed $4.2 million to the City of Regina to continue funding for police officers to conduct comprehensive investigations and work on a number of proactive, community-based policing initiatives in order to help reduce crime.

The Government of Saskatchewan’s Targeted Police Initiatives is responding to community crime-related priorities through the Enhanced Community Policing Program, Serious Habitual Offender Comprehensive Action Plan Program, Organized/Serious Crimes Task Force Program, Internet Child Exploitation Program, Enhanced Investigative Policing Program and the Missing Persons Task Force Program.

“We’re pleased to continue Regina’s funding for Targeted Police Initiatives to reduce crime,” Minister responsible for Corrections and Policing Christine Tell said.  “The Targeted Police Initiatives allows the Regina Police Service and the community to work together to solve problems of crime and safety issues and improves the quality of life for everyone in the community.”

“Regina has seen steady decreases in the total crime rate for the past decade,” Regina Police Service Chief Troy Hagen said.  “We believe this success is due to our many effective partnerships, including these strategic, targeted investments by the province.”

“As our city continues to grow and prosper, it is paramount that we focus on the safety of our community,” Regina Mayor Michael Fougere said.  “I applaud the province for funding these initiatives for the Regina Police Service as we make this city the best place to live in Canada.”

This annual funding through the Targeted Police Initiatives offer grants that support police-based efforts to reduce crime, victimization, and the prevention and intervention of at-risk populations.
