Construction Begins on the New Regional Hospital in Moose Jaw

Released on April 29, 2013

Residents in Moose Jaw and surrounding area are one step closer to an innovative new regional hospital that will enable better and safer quality care for patients.

A ceremony to celebrate the start of construction took place at the new hospital site today.  The new facility is expected to be complete by December 2014.

"This is an historic day for people of Moose Jaw and area,” Premier Brad Wall said.  “This new facility will put patients first and ensure the best possible health services here in Moose Jaw for years to come.   Congratulations to the community and everyone who has been a part of planning this important project.”

“I am so honoured to participate in this exciting step forward on the new hospital project,” Health Minister Dustin Duncan said.  “With the tremendous contributions from our patients, families, care providers, staff and the project team, this state-of-the-art, first-of-its-kind facility will provide a world-class health care experience for patients.”

Lean methodology is fully integrated into the design, functioning and culture of the facility.  The design and care model of the new regional hospital will allow health care services to come to patients in single rooms, rather than requiring patients to travel throughout the facility.  This will result in more convenient services for patients, operational efficiencies and improvements in safety.

In conjunction with the Lean methodology, the hospital planning phase also incorporated demographic population modeling and forecasting to ensure the facility will meet the needs of a growing city and surrounding area in the years to come.

“This is an important marker in our journey toward a new hospital,” Five Hills Health Region CEO Cheryl Craig said.  “It is the culmination of literally thousands of hours of work across a team of more than two hundred people.  Our staff, physicians, patient-family representatives, and our integrated project delivery team have been working together to design this new facility.  We celebrate this milestone while recognizing that significant work lies ahead through the next phase of our journey.”

“It’s an exciting day for Moose Jaw residents to see the start of construction on the new hospital,” Moose Jaw Mayor Deb Higgins said.  “This state-of-the-art facility will enhance health care services and support the needs of our growing community.”

The provincial government is contributing 80 per cent toward the total project cost of $99.5 million.  Local funding covers the remaining 20 per cent.  The Moose Jaw Health Foundation will work in partnership with the health region, the Ministry of Health, and health care professionals to equip and furnish the new regional hospital.

Premier Wall and Minister Duncan, along with local municipal officials, and representatives of the Five Hills Health Region attended the ceremony.
