Corrections and Policing, through the Ministry of Justice, contributed $4.3 million to the City of Saskatoon to continue funding for officers to conduct comprehensive investigations and work on a number of proactive, community-based policing initiatives in order to help reduce crime.
The Government of Saskatchewan’s Targeted Police Initiatives is responding to community crime-related priorities through the Enhanced Community Policing Program, Serious Habitual Offender Comprehensive Action Plan Program, Organized/Serious Crimes Task Force Program, Missing Persons Task Force Program, Child Sexual Exploitation Program, Internet Child Exploitation Program, Enhanced Investigative Policing Program, and the Serious Violent Offender Program.
“We’re pleased to continue Saskatoon’s funding for Targeted Police Initiatives to reduce crime,” Minister responsible for Corrections and Policing Christine Tell said. “The all-inclusive approach offered by community policing is an excellent opportunity to continue to seek out new policing innovations and at the same time build co-operation and strong partnerships with communities.”
“The funding provided by the province of Saskatchewan has directly enhanced our efforts to reduce and deter violent crime, gang activity and child exploitation, while reducing our overall crime rate,” Saskatoon Police Chief Clive Weighill said. “It clearly demonstrates the province's commitment to make our city safer.”
This annual funding through the Targeted Police Initiatives offer grants that support police-based efforts to reduce crime, victimization, and the prevention and intervention of at-risk populations.
