Funding Increased for Yorkton-Area Victims Services

Released on April 25, 2013

The Ministry of Justice is increasing annual funding for Parkland Victims Services Inc. to expand service to six nearby RCMP detachments.  Yorkton MLA Greg Ottenbreit, on behalf of Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant made today’s announcement which coincides with Parkland’s 20th anniversary celebration in Yorkton.

“Parkland has earned a reputation for providing valuable services to victims of crime in the Yorkton area over the last 20 years,” Wyant said.  “With increased support, I am pleased that Parkland will be able to offer these important services to residents in six more surrounding communities.”

The additional funding of $128,418 will allow the program to expand to the Canora, Esterhazy, Melville, Moosomin, Wadena and Wynyard RCMP detachments.  Parkland opened in 1993 as the first RCMP-based victim services program in Saskatchewan, and currently provides services in the Yorkton, Broadview and Kamsack detachment areas.

The Ministry of Justice will also be providing additional funding for expansions of other victim services programs to the RCMP detachment areas of Assiniboia, Coronach and Kyle.

Police-based victim services programs work closely with police and provide information, support, and referrals to victims of crime and traumatic events.  Services are largely delivered by nearly 300 volunteers around the province.

The new funding for these community-based organizations is part of a province-wide expansion of police-based victim services announced in 2012.  The expansion will ensure every community and person in Saskatchewan has access to victim services programs by the end of 2013-14.
