After just four months of operation, the Mineral Administration Registry Saskatchewan (MARS) system, used for issuing mineral claims online, has significantly reduced processing times for mineral claim staking. The sustained level of activity, since the December launch, confirms how well the registry has been adopted by industry.
So far, 522 new claims, covering 1.46 million hectares have been issued using the MARS system. This is more than the total area of claims issued in the previous 22 months using the old ground staking system. Despite this high level of activity, mineral claims are now typically being confirmed within five business days, when it would previously take up to two months.
“The mining industry in this province is diverse, from border to border we have resources that play a key role in our growing economy,” Energy and Resources Minister Tim McMillan said. “This new system keeps Saskatchewan competitive and it plays a significant role in ensuring the long term, sustainable growth of this sector.”
The MARS system also saw its first online staking rush in March following the announcement of the Patterson Lake South uranium discovery by Alpha Minerals Inc. and Fission Energy Corp, in the south west of Saskatchewan’s Athabasca Basin. The Patterson Lake rush included 119 claims covering more than 458,000 hectares.
“The MARS online system allows industry to save millions of dollars in staking costs and invest the funds in further exploration,” McMillan said. “The ease of acquiring claims is also crucial and can become especially helpful when new information on an area becomes available, like the previously underexplored southwest margin of the Athabasca Basin.”
Mining contributes about 20 per cent of Saskatchewan’s total exports and generates approximately 30,500 direct and indirect jobs. For 2012, mineral exploration expenditures totalled $323 million.
