2013 Provincial Flood Response Update, April 3

Beginning today, the Ministry of Government Relations, in collaboration with various government ministries, agencies, Crown corporations and stakeholder groups, will issue a weekly update on key steps the province and its partners are taking to mitigate and alleviate potential flooding across the province.

The Water Security Agency (WSA)

  • WSA launched the 2013 Emergency Flood Damage Reduction Program which provides engineering and technical assistance to municipalities while sharing the cost of permanent and temporary flood prevention works.  
  • WSA recently launched a mobile website which will provide better access to information on stream flows, lake levels, news and advisories.
  • WSA and the Ministry of Government Relations are hosting an open house on runoff and flood preparedness in Estevan on Wednesday, April 3 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Super 8 Motel, 134 2nd Avenue.
  • WSA will meet with Red Earth First Nation to discuss flood preparedness on April 8. 
  • On March 27, outflows from Rafferty and Alameda reservoirs increased to 20 m3/s and 14 m3/s respectively.  A release from Boundary Reservoir was also initiated and increased to 6 m3/s.
  • WSA will release the April spring run-off forecast update during the week of April 8. 

Emergency Management and Fire Safety (EMFS)

  • EMFS has deployed a cache of emergency equipment to the south of the province, strategically located near areas likely to be affected by flooding.
  • EMFS will continue to work with communities to improve their emergency preparedness, and encourages them to prepare to activate their emergency plans and emergency operations centres, should the need arise.
  • Rapid responder personnel are being increased to the same level as 2011.
  • Private citizens looking for assistance in preparing for flooding should contact their municipality or band office.

The Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP)

  • PDAP Response Teams are preparing to set up locations in severely impacted communities to assist claimants and local officials. 
  • PDAP is currently in the midst of hiring additional staff to ensure needs are met across the province.
