Residents of northern Saskatchewan have a new opportunity for skills, jobs and business development training following the opening of the Centre of Excellence for Education and Business Development by the Big River First Nation. The Government of Saskatchewan, through the Community Development Trust Fund (CDTF) provided more than $2.1 million toward the construction of this centre.
"This facility will assist local people in developing and improving their skills and training to contribute to the local economy and help them seize the opportunities available in our province today," Saskatchewan Rivers MLA Nadine Wilson said on behalf of Economy Minister Bill Boyd. "Big River First Nation is leading the way in diversifying economic growth in the region and the Government of Saskatchewan is happy to support this project."
The Centre of Excellence contains a computer laboratory and two large classrooms with distance education capacity and onsite programs delivered by the University of Saskatchewan and other institutions.
"Education is a window to opportunity and a sound approach to helping youth find their way in life, getting work experience and acquiring good jobs," Big River First Nation Chief Bruce Morin said. "The centre is going to be great for the community and great for the province of Saskatchewan."
In 2008, the federal government announced the $1 billion CDTF intended to support activities that strengthen economic opportunities for communities negatively affected by global financial and commodity market disruption. Saskatchewan's share of the fund is $36.4 million over three years.
