RIBBON CUTTING TO COMMEMORATE GRAND OPENING OF REGINA’S DOUGLAS PARK SCHOOL

Released on September 17, 2012

Today Education Minister Russ Marchuk joined students, teachers, dignitaries and representatives from the Regina Public School Division to commemorate the grand opening of the new $19.6 million Douglas Park School in Regina.

"We believe that investing in education is essential to the success of our students and the future success of Saskatchewan," Marchuk said. "Two words come to mind with this new school - innovation and discovery. I'm confident that students, teachers and parents will be given a solid educational opportunity in the new Douglas Park School."

Designed to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver standard, this sustainable school boasts an innovative open space design and few solid walls, allowing natural light throughout the building. The open space is designed to encourage improved student outcomes through project-based learning, group work and independent study. With three separate learning communities, the school offers instructional space that can be shaped and partitioned based on the type of learning environment students require.

The Government of Saskatchewan contributed more than $13 million toward this innovative education facility.

"This new school building that features flexible learning spaces and student focused design and that is built with environmentally and fiscally responsible construction is a perfect example of how Regina Public Schools is supporting learning in the 21st Century," Regina Board of Education Chairperson Katherine Gagne said.

Since November 2007, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed approximately $500 million toward 41 major school capital projects and approximately 860 additional smaller school capital projects across the province. This represents a record high investment in school infrastructure.
