Premier Brad Wall today continued to focus on innovation during the nine-day trade mission to Asia. Wall was asked to be a co-panelist for the 'Future of Innovation' discussion at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Tianjin, China. WEF is an international forum bringing together business and government leaders from about 90 countries from around the world.
"The new economy requires focus on innovation," Wall said. "Our government will continue to push innovation and make it a priority in all areas of Saskatchewan's economy."
Several agreements have been signed between Saskatchewan and Chinese entities on the mission.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between SaskPower, China Beijing Environment Exchange (CBEEX), and China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchange (CICETE) helps Saskatchewan capture a share of the growing Carbon Capture Sequestration (CCS) knowledge and emerging markets. The agreement commits the parties to further collaboration on opportunities for information and technology sharing. The goal is to improve CCS technology and learn valuable lessons that can be used to save money on future CCS projects through the use of the carbon capture test facility at Shand.
An agreement between SaskTel and Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, will trial new wireless technology in Saskatchewan. The agreement will establish Saskatchewan as the first Canadian province to trial/test technology that could deliver faster internet service to rural Saskatchewan residents and voice services that may potentially replace SaskTel's aging copper infrastructure.
A Letter of Intent signed by Innovation Saskatchewan will provide path-finding support to Guangzhou South Ocean International Engineering & Technology Service Co (GSO) to assist in establishing partnerships with oilseed producers and processors, accessing highly skilled labour, and site selection so the company can establish a Saskatchewan-based service industry. Support will include areas such as equipment, distribution and service, including custom processing for oilseed processors in North America.
Another MOU was signed in China between West Central Pelleting and Haoyue Group, the leading beef producing company in China. The company is seeking a supplier for custom-made cattle feed/pellets.
In addition, meetings were held with the Minister of Education and the President of Jilin Agricultural University to highlight shared interest in animal and plant science programs and academic exchanges between the University of Saskatchewan and the Chinese university.
The nine-day trade mission includes stops in China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Indonesia.
