NEW HOMES OFFER HOPE TO REGINA YOUTH

Released on September 12, 2012

Three new homes to help at-risk youth were officially opened in Regina today. The three homes - called UTURN, Ezekiel House and Jacob House - are launching thanks to a partnership between the Ministry of Social Services and Regina Youth for Christ Inc.

"We are very pleased to work in partnership with Regina Youth for Christ to help make these homes a reality," Social Services Minister June Draude said. "I know that these 14 spaces will make a real difference in the lives of at-risk youth and young adults in Regina."

"Regina Youth for Christ sees the hope and potential in every young person," Regina Youth for Christ Executive Director James Clifford said. "The organization is committed to helping young people in our province become healthy, productive and responsible adults. Three years of planning, prayer and preparation have come together to make the new Youth for Christ house a reality and more than $350,000 was contributed to the project by the people of Regina and the Westridge Group of companies."

UTURN will operate as a five space supported semi-independent living environment for at-risk male youth between the ages 16 and 18. This home will require residents to either be enrolled in an educational program, working full time or actively looking for work. Ezekiel House will provide five new spaces for at-risk youth between the ages of 13 and 16 as they transition to the semi-independent living program. Jacob House consists of two basement suites for four young adults between the ages of 18 and 25.

The Ministry of Social Services is providing per diem funding up to $625,000 if all 10 spaces are filled in UTURN and Ezekiel House. The ministry has also committed $65,000 in funding to help with the cost of home furnishings and staff training. In 2012-13, the ministry is providing more than $1 million in funding to Youth for Christ homes across the province.
