SUPPORT FROM THE PROVINCE ENABLES LIGHTHOUSE TO SHINE A BEACON OF HOPE IN SASKATOON

Released on September 11, 2012

Close to 70 of Saskatoon's most vulnerable citizens will have a new place to call home, thanks to a new supported living housing project in the city. The Lighthouse Supported Living Inc. (Lighthouse) tower project is a partnership between the province, Lighthouse and the City of Saskatoon. The Saskatchewan Housing Corporation contributed approximately $12.9 million toward the total project cost of more than $17 million, with the balance provided by Lighthouse and the City of Saskatoon.

"Our government is pleased to work with our partners to support this important initiative that will support some of the most vulnerable members of this community," Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude said. "This project reflects our government's commitment to helping Saskatchewan residents who are most in need of housing support, in order for them to live independently and productively in the community."

The tower project will accommodate close to 70 individuals, including: the working poor; students; people who are living in the existing Lighthouse Supportive Living Inc. building and no longer require ongoing support; people with disabilities or mental illness who are able to live on their own; and people recovering from addictions who still require some support to be successful in their recovery.

"The City of Saskatoon is pleased to partner with the Lighthouse to provide capital funding of $925,000 toward the cost of this 58 unit tower, which will provide stable and affordable housing for those who need it most," Saskatoon Mayor Donald Atchison said. "Additionally, the city is providing a five-year incremental property tax abatement for this project. This is one of several affordable housing projects that the City of Saskatoon is supporting and has invested close to $15 million in new affordable housing since 2008."

The project consists of 58 fully independent units in an eight floor apartment complex. There are six single accessible units, 41 single units and 11 two-bedroom units. The building is located at 227 - 20th Street East in Saskatoon.

"We're grateful for the support of all our partners in this project," Lighthouse Supported Living Inc. Executive Director Don Windels said. "This new facility will provide an affordable option to those working in entry level positions as well as a next step for current tenants able to live independently but still requiring access to some supports enabling them to reach their potential."

SHC continues to work with the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors to develop new housing opportunities in Saskatoon. Since November 2007, 995 affordable rental units have been completed in the community, with an additional 54 rental units under construction.
