NEW YOUTH ADDICTION TREATMENT CENTRE IMPROVES ACCESS TO CARE

Released on September 7, 2012

A new facility in Prince Albert will improve access to treatment for youth with substance abuse issues in the province. The Valley Hill Youth Treatment Centre celebrated its grand opening today.

The 15-bed facility provides a six-week residential treatment program for youth ages 12 to 17.

"The provincial government is very pleased to see the Valley Hill Youth Treatment Centre up and running," Health Minister Dustin Duncan said. "We are committed to a health system that provides better care and better services to vulnerable Saskatchewan youth. Our government appreciates the opportunity to partner with Prince Albert Grand Council and Prince Albert Parkland Health Region for the development and completion of the facility. This type of intersectoral collaboration is key to improving health outcomes."

The Ministry of Health invested $5.09 million in the construction of the facility, and will provide $1.88 million for annual operating costs. The project is entirely funded by the provincial government.

"We have worked closely with Prince Albert Parkland Regional Health Authority and Saskatchewan Ministry of Health," Prince Albert Grand Council Grand Chief Ron Michel said. "We shared a common concern for the youth who are struggling with substance abuse. This facility will provide a safe, caring and therapeutic environment that can provide positive changes in the lives of our youth."

The treatment centre incorporates an elder's room and a prayer and ceremonial room which are available for residents during their recovery process.

"The Board of Directors and staff of the Valley Hill Youth Treatment Centre look forward to welcoming young people from throughout Saskatchewan who are struggling with substance abuse and addictions," Valley Hill Youth Treatment Centre Chair Darlene Bessey said. "We will provide a compassionate and holistic environment of support to youth engaged in a healing journey."

"Our Board of Directors and the health region look forward to working with the board members and staff of the Valley Hill Youth Treatment Centre," Prince Albert Parkland Regional Health Authority Chair Gord Dobrowolsky said. "The new facility and its staff will deliver a needed service to our province's youth suffering from addictions."

The Grand Council and the Ministry of Health worked in partnership with the health region managing the construction of the treatment centre. A non-profit organization, Valley Hill Youth Treatment Centre Inc. was created to oversee facility operations.

The treatment centre will open its doors to welcome patients on September 13.
