PREMIER WALL EMBARKS ON TRADE MISSION TO ASIA

Released on September 6, 2012

On September 8, Premier Brad Wall will depart on a nine-day Saskatchewan trade mission to China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Indonesia.

"China currently has the second largest economy in the world, which continues to experience rapid growth," Wall said. "Trade with China represents an incredible opportunity for the Province of Saskatchewan. Our province is blessed with an abundance of natural resources that can help continue to fuel the growth that many counties in the Asian region are experiencing."

Since 2006, Saskatchewan exports to China have almost tripled to $1.7 billion in 2011. Potash, canola seed, canola oil and peas comprise 83 per cent of Saskatchewan's trade exports to China.

While in China, Premier Wall will meet with government officials and business leaders and attend a reception hosted by the Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership (STEP).

Wall will join New West Partnership colleagues British Columbia Premier Christy Clark and Alberta Premier Alison Redford to address participants of the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting of the New Champions. The annual three-day meeting, held this year in Tianjin, China, brings together business and government leaders from approximately 90 countries, engaging in discussions and workshops under the theme Creating the Future Economy.

Wall will also participate in a Council of Federation panel of Canadian premiers hosted by the Canada Chinese Business Council.

Premier Wall will travel to Singapore where he will meet with representatives from Canpotex, and its biggest international customer, Wilmar International. In addition, meetings with several other international agricultural companies will take place.

"The Government of Saskatchewan remains committed to fulfilling our promise to continue to seek out new markets and economic opportunities for Saskatchewan producers," Wall said. "This remains our promise. There is tremendous potential for future growth in each of the countries that we will be visiting on this mission."

The Premier will travel to Indonesia where he will meet with representatives from the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Agriculture before participating in a reception hosted by Canadian Ambassador Mackenzie Clugston. Wall will also meet with government and business leaders at an event hosted by the Indonesia-Canada Chamber of Commerce.

"Almost 50 per cent of all Canadian trade to Indonesia comes from the province of Saskatchewan," Wall said. "That is a number that we are incredibly proud of, yet also very eager to increase."

Indonesia is Saskatchewan's fifth largest export market. In 2011, provincial exports hit an all time high of $817 million. Major exports include potash, wheat and semi-chemical wood pulp.

Premier Wall is the first Canadian premier in at least 16 years to visit Indonesia and first Saskatchewan premier to ever visit the country.

A group of 25 Saskatchewan-based companies including; Alliance Grain Traders, Titan Clean Energy, IPAC-CO2 Research, Saskatchewan Pulse Growers, Prairie West Terminal and others, are being led by STEP on the mission to explore opportunities in Asia. SaskTel and SaskPower, as well as the University of Saskatchewan, will also be present for portions of the mission.
