Today Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield announced the names of eight recipients to be invested into the Saskatchewan Order of Merit.
"I am looking forward to honouring eight remarkable Canadians with the Saskatchewan Order of Merit this year," Solomon Schofield said. "The recipients are individuals of uncommon achievement and generosity, and are most deserving of our province's highest honour."
This year's recipients are:
- Mr. Raymond E. Ahenakew, First Nations leader - Ahtahkakoop First Nation, Cochin;
- Mr. Bruce W. Beatty, C.M., C.D. (posthumous), graphic artist - Ottawa;
- Ms. Sandra L. Birdsell, C.M., author and teacher - Regina;
- Dr. Barbara Keirnes Young, educator - Regina;
- Mr. W. Thomas Molloy, O.C., Q.C., LL.B., LL.D., lawyer - Saskatoon;
- Dr. Brian G. Rossnagel, professor emeritus - Saskatoon;
- Mr. David A. Thauberger, C.M., artist - Regina; and
- Mr. W. Brett Wilson, C.M., LL.D., entrepreneur, community leader and philanthropist - Calgary.
The Saskatchewan Order of Merit is the province's highest honour, recognizing individuals who have contributed significantly to the well-being of the province and its residents. Including the eight new members, there have been 193 appointments to the Order of Merit since its inception in 1985.
The eight recipients will be officially invested into the Saskatchewan Order of Merit during a ceremony to be held on November 27 in Saskatoon.
