Today Premier Brad Wall, Education Minister Russ Marchuk, students, dignitaries and representatives from the Chinook and Holy Trinity School Divisions gathered to break ground for École Centennial and All Saints schools; a $51 million joint-use education facility which is part of the larger Swift Current Integrated Facility.
"As the local MLA, I've heard from both school divisions that new schools were important," Wall said. "If we want to keep growing in Saskatchewan, we have to invest in projects like this. It's a great day for the 1,000 students that will be attending this facility, and it's a great day for Swift Current."
"We believe that investing in education is paramount to the future of Saskatchewan," Marchuk said. "By investing in education today, we are preparing for tomorrow and the opportunity that it will bring."
Designed as part of the Swift Current Integrated Facility, these two schools will share practical and applied arts space, band rooms and a child care facility. The integrated facility will be a community hub for Swift Current, offering a fieldhouse and wellness centre, a library and art gallery, a hospital and long-term care facility, and an aquatics centre, all of which will be readily available to the students attending both École Centennial and All Saints school.
The Government of Saskatchewan has committed more than $33 million toward this innovative education facility.
"There has been a strong commitment from the school divisions and partners to this extraordinary project," Chinook Board of Education Chairperson Randy Beler said. "This kind of co-operation and enthusiasm is what will help us make history in September of 2014, when the doors of École Centennial and All Saints Catholic schools are officially open for our students to enjoy a unique integrated learning environment. We greatly appreciate the support of our MLA Brad Wall, and would like to acknowledge the Ministry of Education for their contribution to moving the project forward."
"This project is the result of collaboration, innovation and shared vision reflecting the unique identities of the Holy Trinity and Chinook School Boards," Holy Trinity Board of Education Chairperson Mark Corbin said. "Thank you to our colleagues and community partners, as well as the provincial government for working with us to develop this innovative learning space designed for 21st century students. All Saints Catholic and École Centennial joint school is an example of true community collaboration."
Since November 2007, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed approximately $500 million toward 41 major school capital projects and approximately 860 additional smaller school capital projects across the province. This represents a record high investment in school infrastructure.
