FUNDING PARTNERSHIP LEADS TO INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENTS ON HIGHWAY 1

Released on October 17, 2012

Weekly Highway Construction Update

A $780,000 safety improvement to an intersection on Highway 1 east of Regina has resulted in three new lanes, including one acceleration lane and two turning lanes near Gravel Pit Road. The project is cost-shared between the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure and Redhead Equipment.

"This partnership with Redhead Equipment is an example of how our province is addressing the challenges of growth," Highways and Infrastructure Minister Don McMorris said. "We're determined to move forward on building the Saskatchewan Advantage as our communities continue to grow at a record pace. This is a smart, pragmatic and cost-effective partnership for the people of Saskatchewan."

The right turn and left turn lanes were both already slotted for safety improvements. Redhead Equipment approached the ministry with a cost-sharing agreement that saw Redhead Equipment contribute $390,000, saving Saskatchewan taxpayers 50 per cent of the projects value. This project will improve safety for the employees and customers of Redhead, while addressing some of the immediate challenges of busy highway traffic in the area.

"We're very pleased to partner with the provincial government in this project," Redhead Equipment President and CEO Gary Redhead said. "It will improve access to our facility and will provide added safety for our employees coming to work and our customers who travel to see us."

New work added to this week's highway construction update includes milling and paving on Highway 1 west of Gull Lake and raising a section of Highway 4 south of Biggar.

The weekly provincial highway construction update is posted to the Highway Hotline Facebook page at www.facebook.com/SaskatchewanHighwayHotline and tweeted @SKGovHwyHotline.
