PROVINCE HELPS BUILD SEVEN HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOMES IN LLOYDMINSTER

Released on October 15, 2012

Seven Habitat for Humanity partner families in Lloydminster will soon have a home to call their own, thanks to $350,000 in funding from the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. Construction of the homes was officially launched today at a sod-turning ceremony in Lloydminster.

"These homes are outstanding examples of people from all backgrounds working together to create opportunities for hard-working Lloydminster families," Minister responsible for Energy and Resources and MLA for Lloydminster Tim McMillan said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude. "Habitat's homeownership model empowers families to make positive changes in their lives, and builds sustainable communities one home at a time. We are proud to support Habitat for Humanity and, most importantly, help Saskatchewan families to move forward."

"Habitat for Humanity ‘On the Border' Lloydminster Society has been helping families achieve affordable homeownership since 1999," Habitat for Humanity Board Chair Rowena Eddy said. "With our local philosophy of full circle building, which champions not simply building houses, but building homes, building community and building character, Habitat for Humanity ‘On the Border' appreciates the continuing support of the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation as we continue to help Lloydminster families in housing need and improve our community at the same time with the construction of the Forester Place townhouse complex."

Located at 4703 - 43rd Street in Lloydminster, the project will consist of the new construction of a seven-unit townhouse condominium. Each 1,135 square foot home will have three bedrooms. The homes are expected to be completed in December 2013.

Since 2009, the province has invested $4.5 million in funding to help Habitat for Humanity Saskatchewan affiliates in providing a total of 90 homes for low- to moderate-income families across the province in the communities of Lloydminster, Prince Albert, Regina, Moose Jaw, Yorkton, Saskatoon, Humboldt and Nipawin. Saskatchewan Housing Corporation has advanced $3.2 million of the $4.5 million available to Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the province to assist in the delivery of 64 homes for families.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership. Each partner family selected by Habitat for Humanity will contribute a minimum of 500 hours of volunteer labour, or sweat equity, toward the building of their home and other Habitat homes.
