The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed October as Community Living Month in the province. The proclamation recognizes the many accomplishments and contributions of people with intellectual disabilities, as well as the efforts of the staff and volunteers of the Saskatchewan Association for Community Living (SACL). SACL's mandate is to ensure that people with intellectual disabilities across Saskatchewan live in inclusive communities.
"Our government appreciates SACL's efforts on behalf of all Saskatchewan residents with intellectual disabilities," Social Services Minister June Draude said. "We are pleased to support SACL's efforts through this proclamation."
"The Saskatchewan Association for Community Living has adopted October as a time to celebrate community living and the contributions individuals with intellectual disabilities make in our communities every day," SACL President Gloria Mahussier said. "SACL branches will be hosting events throughout Saskatchewan to recognize community living month and to promote the meaning of inclusion."
By March 31, 2013, the Saskatchewan government will fulfill its multi-year commitment to address the waitlist of 440 individuals with intellectual disabilities who require specialized, residential, and/or day programs to meet their needs. To date, services are in place or in development for 418 (or 95 per cent) of the individuals.
"The significant progress achieved through the waitlist initiative has been a result of our partnerships with community-based organizations," Draude said. "By working together, we will ensure Saskatchewan is the best place in Canada for people with disabilities to live."
