Today Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart announced nearly $56,000 in provincial funding to Canadian Western Agribition to increase international marketing opportunities through Agribition's newly-created Incoming Buyers Program.
"Our government is committed to increasing market access, developing trade partnerships and increasing exports of Saskatchewan agriculture products," Stewart said. "Agribition's Incoming Buyers Program will increase international marketing opportunities, promote Saskatchewan agriculture products and build relationships to support our industry."
This support comes from the Ministry of Agriculture's $1 million International Market Development Program. The International Market Development Program is designed to help industry establish, maintain and expand international market presence; increase the number and value of incoming and outgoing trade missions; and open, protect and expand market access for Saskatchewan products.
"When it comes to international business, Canadian Western Agribition is on-par with the United States, the European Union and Australia who have their own incoming buyers programs, attracting buyers to their respective markets," Canadian Western Agribition CEO Marty Seymour said. "This funding and the Incoming Buyers Program will enhance our ability to attract international business and maintain Saskatchewan's place as a world-class producer and exporter of agricultural products."
The provincial government's funding helped Agribition leverage additional support from the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency Ltd. (ALMA) and the Canadian Beef Breeds Council (CBBC). With a total budget of $111,500, the program will provide significant support in travel incentives to attract international guests interested in purchasing Canadian cattle and cattle genetics.
"The Incoming Buyers Program is an excellent opportunity to promote our cattle industry abroad and create new markets for our products," ALMA CEO Gordon Cove said.
"In the last few years we have marketed more than $2 million in purebred beef cattle as a result of international connections made at Canadian Western Agribition," Canadian Beef Breeds Council Executive Director Doug Fee said. "This is our opportunity to support the biggest show in the country and make it even bigger."
On an annual basis, Agribition attracts more than 800 international guests from more than 70 countries interested in Canadian agriculture products.
