Today Provincial Secretary Wayne Elhard presented the Saskatoon-area francophone community with a Fransaskois flag in recognition of their contribution to French language and culture in Saskatchewan.
"It is my honour to present this flag to the francophone community in Saskatoon," Elhard said. "And it is my sincere hope that this flag will serve as a reminder to everyone within the larger community, not just francophones, of the social, cultural and economic contribution made by the Fransaskois to the benefit of our whole province."
The Fransaskois flag was adopted as a provincial emblem in 2005 to recognize the status of French as one of Canada's official languages and acknowledge the heritage of Saskatchewan's francophones and their significant contributions to the province.
A plaque was also presented to the community to commemorate the event. The flag and a commemorative plaque have been presented to a number of communities in recent years as part of a province-wide recognition initiative. Other communities that have been recognized are Regina, Duck Lake, Ferland, St. Denis, Gravelbourg and Zenon Park.
