Visitors to Meadow Lake Provincial Park will soon be able to experience a new rental accommodation facility that will become an integral part of the tourism landscape for this area.
The Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport recently signed Development and Commercial Lease agreements with Waters Edge Eco Lodge for a new year-round facility.
"Our province is growing; we have seen an increased number of visitors to our parks in 2012," Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Kevin Doherty said. "This new facility will provide additional amenities that will continue to enhance our parks and attract more visitors each year."
Located on the west side of Greig Lake, the Waters Edge Eco Lodge will incorporate sustainable ecological practices in the design, construction and operation of the facility. An environmentally-conscious plan minimizes the impact on the environment through energy efficiency, recycling, composting and even an organic garden that will provide food services for guests of the lodge.
"Having spent most of our lives in northern Saskatchewan, we appreciate the natural beauty of the area and we are committed to providing accommodations that ensure the environment is preserved for future generations," Waters Edge Eco Lodge President Shelly Pikowicz said. "In planning this facility, we made every effort to not duplicate services already available in the park or surrounding communities."
Phase one construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2013 with the opening scheduled for spring of 2014. It will include an eight-bedroom, all-season lodge with an indoor event facility as well as an outdoor tent for rental or hosting events to promote arts, culture and wellness in the park. Phase two construction will include six self-contained cottages. Waters Edge estimates the development cost for the new facility to be $1.7 million.
Private sector developments play an important role in providing services and facilities to park visitors and, along with government's on-going commitment to invest in parks, ensure visitors continue to enjoy their provincial parks experience. Government has invested $33 million to improve park facilities from 2008 to 2012, and will continue to improve Saskatchewan's provincial parks by investing, over and above base capital funding, an additional $10 million in park upgrades from 2012 to 2016.
