Today, Saskatoon Sutherland MLA Paul Merriman, on behalf of Education Minister Russ Marchuk, joined the Spadina Early Learning and Childcare Co-operative Board, representatives from the Saskatoon Public School Division and families and community members at the opening of 51 child care spaces at Spadina Early Learning and Childcare Co-operative - Princess Alexandra in Saskatoon.
"Increasing the number of high-quality, licensed child care spaces for Saskatchewan families is a priority for the Government of Saskatchewan," Merriman said. "The 51 spaces celebrated today demonstrate our commitment and investment in child care."
The Government of Saskatchewan has invested $709,000 since 2010, to develop the spaces at the centre. This money supported the renovations as well as the purchase of furniture, equipment and early learning materials.
"Spadina Early Learning and Childcare is excited to partner with Saskatoon Public School Division to offer high quality child care to the Riversdale community and Saskatoon in Princess Alexandra Community School," Spadina Early Learning and Childcare Cooperative Managing Director Lisa Markosky-Hodgson said. "The government's willingness to provide funding for licensed early learning spaces is encouraging and shows the commitment they have toward our greatest resource, our children."
Since November 2007, the Government of Saskatchewan has made a record investment in licensed child care, allocating funding for 3,935 new child care spaces to communities across the province. This represents a 42 per cent increase in spaces in the province.
