GOVERNMENT COMMENDS SIIT ON IMPRESSIVE INCREASES TO ENROLMENT AND COMPLETION NUMBERS

Released on May 17, 2012

Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister Rob Norris today celebrated impressive student enrolment and completion numbers at the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technology (SIIT).

SIIT's registrations grew by 26 per cent between 2007-08 and 2010-11, and completion rates increased from 60 per cent to 69 per cent in certificate/diploma programs, in the same period.

"I would like to commend SIIT on the increased number of students taking and completing their post-secondary studies," Norris said. "With the increased demand for skilled workers in our province, these students are better prepared to enter our labour market and meet the demands of our growing economy."

In total 1,576 students completed SIIT programs in 2010-11, reflecting increased retention and completion at the institute as well as employer demand.

"SIIT is committed to increasing the educational outcomes for our students and reducing the gap in First Nations employment," SIIT Vice-President, Student Services and Academics Kim Fraser-Saddleback said. "This will continue with the ongoing successful partnerships with the private sector and all levels of governments."

The 2012-13 provincial budget provided $4.7 million in operating and program funding to SIIT.

"Our government believes that developing the talents of First Nations and Métis people is vital to our province, economy and community well-being," Norris said. "We are pleased to work with SIIT to expand skills training opportunities and support for First Nations and Métis learners."

For more than 35 years, SIIT has provided applied skills training for careers in a variety of areas, including Adult Basic Education, Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, Business Administration and Information Technology, Community and Health Studies, Professional Development and Trades and Industrial Training. SIIT programs are offered at three campuses located in Saskatoon, Regina and Prince Albert and are integrated to combine traditional learning and hands-on training with a First Nations perspective.
