STUDENT CONTEST WINNERS MAKE VIDEOS ABOUT THE LEGISLATIVE BUILDING

Released on May 7, 2012

A group of seven high school students are in Regina this week to make videos about the Saskatchewan Legislative Building. They are the winners of the Saskatchewan Dream Video Contest, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building.

"The Saskatchewan Dream Video Contest has been a wonderful opportunity to engage with students across the province and celebrate the historical and cultural importance of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building, and I can't wait to see what these young film makers have come up with," Minister responsible for the Capital Commission Bill Hutchinson said.

"Involving young students in events to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Legislative building has been a great way to have them share some of what they have learned about Saskatchewan's history, politics and governance, while celebrating what they believe our province stands for," Education Minister Donna Harpauer said. "Through this experience, winners will also have the opportunity to visit the building and see first hand some of what they may have learned in school, including where government decisions are made and why this building has been significant in our province's history."

Lesia Karalash and Sarah Foley, from Aden Bowman Collegiate in Saskatoon, Hayley Olson, Riley Hayes and Kassandra James from Val Marie School and Dayn Halter and Mitchell Bohn from Kindersley Composite School will work with the Saskatchewan Film Pool for the next three days to learn about video production and then shoot, edit and produce videos based on the concepts they submitted about the Legislative Building.

The contest, announced in March, was open to students in Grades nine through 12 who are currently enrolled in a Saskatchewan school or home-based education program. Students were to submit written concepts describing a short video based on the Legislative Building in Regina and the provincial theme of Building the Saskatchewan Dream. Three winning submissions were selected from across the province.

The videos will premiere at a public event to be held on October 11, 2012, to commemorate the opening of the Legislative Building on October 12, 1912. They will also be made available to the public via the internet.
