SASKATCHEWAN STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT THEIR LEGISLATIVE BUILDING AND GOVERNMENT

Released on March 29, 2012

Today students from four Saskatchewan Grade 7 and 8 classes spent the day at their Legislative Building, during its 100th Anniversary, to learn about its significance and the role of government.

"Our Legislature and democratic government system belongs to all citizens of our province, especially our youth," Minister responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Bill Hutchinson said. "We hope that by bringing students to the Legislative Building to learn about its history and about what the people who work there do, we will create a feeling of democratic responsibility and pride in our province that will inspire Saskatchewan's next great leaders."

Students from Douglas Park, St. Joan of Arc, St. Augustine and Balgonie Elementary School met their MLAs, who introduced them in the House. They witnessed House proceedings before proceeding to the Chamber floor to meet with Speaker Dan D'Autremont, Environment Minister Dustin Duncan, Opposition Leader John Nilson and Clerk Greg Putz to learn more about their roles and other roles of government. They also toured the building and watched a video about its history.

"The students are all so excited as this is a tremendous opportunity for them to see the workings, and witness the proceedings of government," St. Joan of Arc Grade 8 teacher Tara Fischer said. "They have just finished learning about government and power in class and I think the first hand experience they will get from this opportunity may have them wanting to learn more about politics and law."

This program is one of several that will occur throughout 2012 including a final public event to be held on October 11, 2012 to commemorate the opening of the Legislative Building on October 12, 1912.
