Released on March 23, 2012
D & R Roofing Inc. of Regina has pleaded guilty to three charges under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act related to a failure to use a fall protection system where a worker may fall three meters or more. The company was fined $3,360 in Regina Provincial Court.
The charges resulted from four separate incidents. The first was an inspection on June 9, 2009, at a construction site in Lumsden. Six workers were observed shingling a roof without fall protection. The second incident occurred July 15, 2009, at a residential construction site near Pense, where seven workers were observed shingling a roof without fall protection. The third and fourth incidents occurred November 17, 2009, and November 25, 2009, respectively, at construction sites in Regina when workers were not tied to an anchor point while shingling a roof. Thirteen other charges against the company were stayed.
Injuries caused by falls represent almost 13 per cent of all workplace injuries reported. OHS has a zero tolerance approach to violations of fall protection.
OHS conducts approximately 4,500 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known and enforced.
