REGINA FAMILY ACHIEVES HOMEOWNERSHIP WITH HELP FROM PROVINCE AND HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Released on June 27, 2012

A Regina family became homeowners today at a key ceremony hosted by Habitat for Humanity. The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), contributed $50,000 to help Habitat for Humanity build the home located at 1049 Retallack Street. The project was also sponsored by Boardwalk Rental Communities, who contributed $75,000 toward the construction of the home, with additional funding provided by Mosaic.

"Our government is strongly committed to addressing Saskatchewan's housing challenges, and to working with valued partners such as Habitat for Humanity to help make that happen," Regina South MLA Bill Hutchinson said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude. "This strong partnership is bringing real, lasting benefits to hard-working Saskatchewan families and communities. We are proud to support Habitat for Humanity's efforts to help more families attain their dream of homeownership and enjoy a better quality of life overall."

"So many families simply need a hand-up - they are not looking for a hand-out," Habitat for Humanity Regina CEO Dennis Coutts said. "On behalf of the family, we are so grateful to Boardwalk Rental Communities for taking the initiative to provide $75,000 toward this home build to help another family achieve homeownership. Coupled with the support from the province at $50,000 per home we build in the province, we have been able to help one more family break the cycle of poverty and become homeowners."

Since 2009, the province has dedicated $4.5 million in funding for Habitat for Humanity affiliates and chapters in Regina, Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, Yorkton, Prince Albert, Lloydminster, Nipawin and Humboldt to help build a total of 90 homes across the province. Habitat for Humanity anticipates a total of 35 construction starts throughout Saskatchewan in 2012.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership. Each selected Habitat partner family contributes 500 hours of sweat equity to build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes, and participates in valuable homeownership training and preparation sessions.
