TRANSPORTATION RECOGNIZED IN SASKATCHEWAN

Released on June 4, 2012

Highways and Infrastructure Minister Don McMorris has proclaimed June 6-12 Saskatchewan Transportation Week.

"Whether it's moving goods across provincial highways, on a rail line, through an airport or by ferry, transportation is vital to our economy," McMorris said. "Those working in the transportation industry play an important role in helping Saskatchewan products reach the global marketplace."

The importance of highways and infrastructure is outlined in this year's provincial budget with a financial commitment of $581.5 million, a 4.5 per cent increase over last year. It's the first year of a four-year $2.2 billion commitment and includes $275.3 million for capital construction in 2012-13. Work is well underway to complete an estimated 1200 kms of highway improvement this year.

"Our government is consistently looking for ways make the transportation network better in Saskatchewan and we applaud the efforts of those who help ensure the industry is operating safely and at full capacity," McMorris said.

"It's important to recognize the efforts of the people who help educate and promote the transportation industry," Saskatoon Transportation Club President Cheryl Starnes said. "We appreciate the provincial government's ongoing support and proclamation of Saskatchewan Transportation Week."

The Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure is responsible for 26,000 kilometres of provincial highways. The ministry also regulates 12 shortline railways and operates 17 northern airports, 12 ferries and one barge in Saskatchewan.
