PROVINCE AND HABITAT FOR HUMANITY SASKATOON BEGIN CONSTRUCTION OF NEW HOMES FOR TWO PARTNER FAMILIES

Released on July 25, 2012

Construction of new homes for two Habitat for Humanity partner families is underway in Saskatoon, thanks to $100,000 in funding assistance from the Government of Saskatchewan, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, to help Habitat for Humanity provide homeownership opportunities for families.

"Our government's partnership with Habitat for Humanity gives us the opportunity to provide a helping hand up to more Saskatchewan families in housing need," Saskatoon Eastview MLA Corey Tochor said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude. "Housing is a basic human need, and by working with others, so much more can be achieved. We are very proud to support Habitat for Humanity's efforts to help families make their homeownership dreams come true and to improve their quality of life."

"Thanks to our partners, the Government of Saskatchewan, Delta Hotels and the Delta Bessborough, we will be able to provide homes for two low-income working families in Saskatoon," Habitat for Humanity Saskatoon Executive Director Barb Cox-Lloyd said. "We are excited to move forward on these homes, so two more families can contribute to our community socially and economically."

Located at 123 Avenue T South in Saskatoon, the Habitat for Humanity project will consist of a bi-level duplex. Each unit will be approximately 1,000 square feet over two levels with four bedrooms. It is anticipated that construction will be complete in April 2013.

Each partner family selected by Habitat for Humanity will contribute a minimum of 500 hours of volunteer labour toward the building of their home and other Habitat homes.

Since 2009, the province has dedicated $4.5 million in funding for Habitat for Humanity affiliates and chapters in Regina, Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, Yorkton, Prince Albert, Lloydminster, Nipawin and Humboldt to help build a total of 90 homes across the province. Habitat for Humanity anticipates a total of 35 construction starts throughout Saskatchewan in 2012.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership.
