FAMILY RENTAL HOUSING PROJECT OPENS IN PRINCE ALBERT

Released on July 12, 2012

Ten Prince Albert families in housing need will now have an affordable, safe place to call home, with assistance from the province and Northern Spruce Housing Corporation (Northern Spruce). The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), contributed approximately $2 million toward the total project cost of approximately $2.9 million, with the funding balance being provided by Northern Spruce and Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC).

"Our government is pleased to work with Northern Spruce to help create homes that are affordable for more First Nations families in need of housing," Prince Albert Northcote MLA Victoria Jurgens, on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude, said. "These homes are an important step forward in improving the supply of housing in Prince Albert. Most importantly, 10 more families will be able to put down roots in a stable neighbourhood and become a part of the community."

"Northern Spruce Housing Corporation is extremely pleased with the beautiful housing units we are officially opening today," Northern Spruce Housing Corporation General Manager Kelly Skiffington said. "So many people within the City of Prince Albert are looking for quality homes to raise their families in, homes in established areas of the city. These 10 units will provide well deserving people with the opportunity to have something they can be proud of at rental rates that they can afford. Our concept from the very beginning was to build a housing complex that captured the essence of the neighborhood; we are thrilled with the final product and what stands before us today."

SHC continues to work with the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors to develop new housing opportunities in Prince Albert. Since November 2007, 124 affordable rental units have been completed in the community, with an additional eight currently under construction.

The project was undertaken by Northern Spruce to help meet significant housing need among First Nations families in the community. Northern Spruce is affiliated with the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC), which own 132 houses while managing another 64 rental units within Prince Albert.

Located at 500 - 22nd Street West in the West Hill neighbourhood of Prince Albert, the project consists of 10 semi-detached, two-bedroom units with porches, green space and laundry.
