A new group home for people with intellectual disabilities officially opened today in Spiritwood.
The project includes a three space home and new 30-hour supported independent living program. The initiative is a partnership between Prairie Community Endeavours Inc., a community-based organization (CBO), and the Ministry of Social Services, which provided capital funding of $150,000 for the project.
"Community-based organizations such as Prairie Community Endeavours are playing an important role in helping people with intellectual disabilities to be included in their communities," Rosthern-Shellbrook MLA Scott Moe said on behalf of Social Services Minister June Draude. "Our government is proud to support their efforts to meet the needs of people with intellectual disabilities in their community."
In addition to the capital funding, Social Services will also provide more than $210,000 in annual funding to Prairie Community Endeavours for the operation of the new group home.
"We're grateful to the Government of Saskatchewan, through the Ministry of Social Services, for its support in making this project a reality," Prairie Community Endeavours Chair Audrey Magnus said. "The government's investment will provide us with the capacity and the staff to expand programming and support individuals from the Community Living waitlist."
The capital funding allocated to this project is part of the provincial government's four-year commitment to address the waitlist of 440 Saskatchewan people with intellectual disabilities who need specialized residential and day programs.
