GOVERNMENT OF SASKATCHEWAN ACHIEVES BOMA BEST CERTIFICATION

Released on January 6, 2012

The Government of Saskatchewan is being recognized for its work to reduce its environmental impact. The Government of Saskatchewan achieved BOMA BESt level three for the environmental and sustainable operation of the L.F. McIntosh Building in Prince Albert and BOMA BESt level two for the Sturdy Stone building in Saskatoon.

BOMA BESt is an environmental certification program for commercial buildings. BOMA is the Building Owners and Managers Association and BESt stands for Building Environment Standards and requires those certified to meet realistic standards for energy and environmental performance of buildings based on accurate and independently verified information. There are four levels of BOMA BESt, with four being the highest certification possible.

"I would like to congratulate the tenants in the L.F. McIntosh and Sturdy Stone buildings for their efforts to green their building operations," Government Services Minister Laura Ross said. "Thanks to their commitment for utilizing the expanded recycling options, supporting initiatives to reduce energy and water consumption, and focusing on reducing waste, we've been recognized by BOMA with government's first level three certification and a level two certification."

In the L.F. McIntosh building, the government has seen reductions in:

  • Energy by 15 per cent;
  • Water by 17 per cent;
  • Waste by 53 per cent through expanded recycling; and
  • C02 by 12.2 per cent.

In the Sturdy Stone building, reductions have occurred in:

  • Energy by 10 per cent;
  • Water by 23 per cent;
  • Waste by 73 per cent through expanded recycling; and
  • C02 by 9.3 per cent.

Government Services is working to reduce government's overall environmental footprint by focusing on greening operations and building more environmentally-friendly buildings. To date, 13 government buildings have received BOMA BESt certification, recognizing their green operations.
