Saskatchewan retail sales and wholesale trade set a double record in December 2011- posting the highest-ever figures for the month of December and the highest annual totals in the province's history.
"Setting these new records shows that Saskatchewan's economy continues to lead the country," Enterprise Minister Jeremy Harrison said. "These records reflect the economic climate of growth, opportunity and optimism that exists in Saskatchewan. At the end of the day that means we're creating more jobs and opportunities across the province, making families confident in their future here."
Saskatchewan experienced monthly retail sales of $1.6 billion (seasonally-unadjusted) in December, putting the total sales figure for 2011 at $16.3 billion. Likewise Saskatchewan's wholesale trade at $1.6 billion (seasonally-unadjusted) also set a new record for the month of December with total wholesale trade at $21.4 billion (seasonally-unadjusted) for 2011. These numbers are the highest ever in Saskatchewan for these economic categories.
In December 2011, compared to December 2010, wholesale trade was up by 13.0 per cent (seasonally-adjusted), ranking Saskatchewan second among the provinces. For the year compared to 2010, wholesale trade was up by 21.8 per cent (seasonally-unadjusted), good for first in percentage growth among the provinces.
In terms of retail sales, numbers were up by 9.5 per cent (seasonally-adjusted) from December 2010 to December 2011, placing Saskatchewan second in percentage growth among the provinces. On a seasonally-unadjusted basis, retail sales in Saskatchewan increased by 8.5 per cent in 2011 compared to 2010, again ranking first in percentage change among the provinces.
