DECEMBER MANUFACTURING SHIPMENTS BREAK RECORD

Released on February 16, 2012

Saskatchewan's manufacturing shipments set a record for the month of December. According to a Statistics Canada report released today, manufacturing shipments in the province totaled $1.1 billion, up by 17.7 per cent (seasonally-adjusted) in December 2011 when compared to December 2010. This ranked Saskatchewan first among the provinces.

"Saskatchewan manufacturers are producing products that are in demand across the country and around the globe," Enterprise Minister Jeremy Harrison said. "The increased sales numbers create opportunities for our businesses to expand and create more jobs for the people of our province."

Compared to 2010, manufacturing shipments in 2011 were up by 15 per cent, (seasonally-unadjusted) which ranked Saskatchewan second among the provinces in terms of percentage change.

"Last year was a strong year for manufacturers," Harrison said. "As the provincial economy continues to grow, our manufacturers are ready to continue setting new records."

On a month over month comparison, manufacturing shipments in December 2011 increased by 0.8 per cent over November 2011. In terms of percentage change, Saskatchewan ranked fourth among the provinces.
