Saskatchewan's housing market continued at a record pace in January according to a report released by CMHC today. Urban housing starts were up 70.8 per cent in January 2012 when compared to last January. Saskatchewan's 473 housing starts were a record for the month of January.
"Saskatchewan's economy is forecasted by many to lead the nation this year," Enterprise Minister Jeremy Harrison said. "Record housing starts is a result of both the economic strength of the province and the record population increases we've seen over the last number of years."
Single family dwellings were up by 20.8 per cent in January 2012 over January 2011, while multiple units increased by 124.8 per cent. Regina had an increase of 118.1 per cent while Saskatoon had a 47.5 per cent increase over the same period.
"With great job opportunities across the province, Saskatchewan people are feeling confident in purchasing new homes," Harrison said. "The growth of available housing is vital as we continue to work to ensure Saskatchewan is the best place in Canada to work, live and raise a family."
