Saskatchewan is joining the rest of Canada in celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Her Majesty The Queen's Accession to the Throne. Lieutenant Governor Dr. Gordon L. Barnhart and Premier Brad Wall announced that February 6, 2012, kicks off a year of festivities to honour the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II's reign as Queen.
Events today include the Lieutenant Governor presenting the first 32 Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals to outstanding Saskatchewan residents at Government House. The Royal Canadian Mint has created 60,000 medals, which will be awarded throughout the year of celebration.
"The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal enables us to pay tribute to our outstanding citizens who have made an enormous difference in our nation and, in some cases, far beyond our borders," Barnhart said. "The first 32 Saskatchewan medal recipients are generous, visionary and committed leaders who have made extraordinary contributions."
Also today, the Queen's Canadian Standard was raised at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building at sunrise. It will fly throughout the day and be lowered at sunset. A website was launched with information on Jubilee festivities, the province's history with the Monarchy, and the role of the Crown in Saskatchewan at www.jubileesk.ca.
"This is an important year for Saskatchewan and Canada, and we are pleased to share in the celebrations across the nation and build on the excitement here at home," Wall said. "Canadians appreciate Her Majesty's dedication over the past 60 years to Canada and the world."
It was announced earlier that Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall will visit Saskatchewan as part of the Royal Tour of Canada during the Queen's Diamond Jubilee year. The tour will take place in May and will include stops in New Brunswick, Ontario, and Saskatchewan. Details of the tour will be announced at a later date.
