PONTEIX STUDENT WINS FIRE PREVENTION WEEK DRAW

Released on December 20, 2012

Grade 4 student Ashley Cyr from École Boréale received a new laptop computer in Ponteix today. She is the lucky winner of the provincial Fire Prevention Week children's contest.

"Fire Prevention Week helps to raise awareness of this very important issue," Government Relations Minister Jim Reiter said. "We know that 78 per cent of deaths from fire occur in the home. This contest encourages kids to learn about fire prevention in their classroom and then take that message home and share it with family and loved ones."

Elementary school students that participate in this annual program, by completing a fire safety activity booklet either at school or home, were eligible to be entered into the draw. In addition to the computer, the winner's school receives $400 for educational supplies.

This year almost 30,000 elementary school students in more than 200 communities participated in the program.

Fire Prevention Week occurs annually in October. The 2012 theme "Have 2 Ways Out" emphasizes the importance of planning and practicing home fire escape.
