LEGACY ARTWORKS TO BE UNVEILED AT LEGISLATIVE BUILDING

Released on December 4, 2012

The Minister responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Kevin Doherty has announced that the Artist-in-Residence Program, a part of the Legislative Building's 100th Anniversary celebrations in partnership with the Saskatchewan Arts Board, is wrapping up with a public celebration.

"The Artist-in-Residence Program not only increased awareness of the 100th Anniversary of the Legislative Building, it encouraged community participation and cultural exchange," Doherty said. "It is another example of government, business and the arts working together to enhance culture and increase the quality of life for Saskatchewan residents. Please join us on Wednesday as we celebrate the artists and unveil their legacy artworks."

The Artist-in-Residence Legacy Artworks unveiling will take place from 4-7 p.m., Wednesday, December 5 including a formal program beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Legislative Building Rotunda.

"This is the first time in Canada that a Legislative building has hosted artists-in-residence," Chair of the Saskatchewan Arts Board Byrna Barclay said. "What better way to celebrate the building's centennial than by leading the country and creating yet another Saskatchewan first? We hope that this program will inspire other provincial and municipal governments, as well as communities, to host similar artist residencies."

Over the past several months, eight Saskatchewan artists explored the history and significance of the Legislative Building through their own artistic discipline. Each artist completed a community engagement component and a legacy artwork component as part of their residency.

Laura Hale was the co-ordinator of the Artist-in-Residence Program and one of the participating artists along with Miranda Jones, Robert Assie, Heather Cline, Allan Dotson, Terri Fidelak, Anita Smith and Sandra Ledingham.

The Artist-in-Residence Program was supported by the Saskatchewan Arts Board and SaskCulture Inc., through the Creative Partnerships program, with funding from the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund for Sport, Culture and Recreation.

An Artist-in-Residence Group Show and Sale will also be on display in the Legislative Building Cumberland Gallery from December 5, until January 13. This exhibit features artworks from the development of the artists' community engaged projects and their legacy pieces, along with previously created artwork from each of the eight artists.
